Phil Ravita

BIOGRAPHY

Mr. Ravita works in the Mid-Atlantic region as a free-lance musician. He is a member of The Baltimore and New York Musician's Unions, Baltimore Music Club, The Baltimore Composer’s Forum, and the Baltimore Jazz Alliance. He began his career by playing Blues and Rock and Roll in local bars and clubs. He graduated Cum Laude from Towson University in 2001.

While at Towson University, Mr. Ravita was first chair bass in the Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble 1. During that time, he also played for The Maryland Arts Festival. While studying at Towson University, Mr. Ravita shared the stage with Claudio Roditi and Gabrielle Goodman.

Mr. Ravita attends the University of Maryland College Park as a Masters in Music Performance major on jazz bass. In his first year at the University, he has shared the concert stage with Scott Wenholdt and Steve Wilson. He played an after show reception for Wayne Shorter and John Patitucci and has represented the University at the Mid-Atlantic College Jazz Orchestra. He performed with the University’s Jazz Ensemble at the Annual Calvin Jones Big Band Jazz Festival.

Mr.Ravita works as a free-lance musician in small and large jazz ensembles, big bands, rock bands, and polka bands, as well as in orchestral settings. His efforts include performances with The William Goffigan Trio (at Art Scape 2001) and a benefit performance with the touring company of “Grease.” He has performed at the East Coast Jazz Festival and Night of 100 Elvises. He has also performed with Ruby Glover, Joyce Scott, Beverly Williams, and the group “La Leyenda”. Mr. Ravita is principal bassist for the Baltimore Philharmonia Orchestra.

In January 2006, The Phil Ravita Jazz Group performed at Lexington Market and was favorably reviewed by the Baltimore Jazz Alliance in their monthly newsletter. “Hard at Work”, another composition by Mr. Ravita was featured at the October 2006 showcase sponsored by the Baltimore Jazz Alliance in conjunction with the Baltimore Composer’s Forum. His composition was performed by the Greg Thompkins Quartet at this first annual showcase of works by jazz composers at the Eubie Blake Cultural Center.

In May of 2007, two of Mr. Ravita’s compositions, “In the Back Door” and “Blue Sunshine," received Honorable Mention in the 14th Annual Billboard International Song Contest.   Several of Mr. Ravita’s compositions have been published in the Baltimore Jazz Alliance’s Baltimore Real Book.

Mr. Ravita’s composition “AHAMAY” was chosen for inclusion on the Baltimore Jazz Alliance’s first compilation CD "Jazzscapes". Recently, his composition, "A Kiss Goodbye", was chosen for the latest compilation CD that will be released in July of 2009. These CDs feature music that is composed and performed by local jazz artists. Several of his Blues compositions have received airplay on the Dr. Lou Radio Show on WNJC 1360 AM in Philadelphia. His jazz suite "Messages" was performed on February 27, 2008 as a part of the Ars Nova concert series sponsored by the Goucher College Music Department and the Baltimore Composers Forum. Other compositions by Mr. Ravita have been included in the Baltimore Real Book, published by the Baltimore Jazz Alliance.

In 2008, The Phil Ravita Jazz Group was selected as a finalist in the Inaugural Chick Webb Jazz Combo competition.

Mr. Ravita performed a concert of original works of local jazz Musicians in February of 2009 that was sponsored by the Baltimore Composers Forum in conjunction with the Baltimore Music Club.

In September and November of 2009 a concert of this original local music will be held at An Die Musik in Baltimore, Maryland. The same group performing at An Die Musik will perform its original music at the Fletcher School of Music in August 9, 2009.

Mr. Ravita plays a 100+ year old Henry Lowendall double bass, an Ibanez five-string Ergodyne electric bass, a Ken Smith six-string electric bass, and a Fender four-string jazz electric bass. He currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland and can be heard regularly performing in the Baltimore Metro Area.
