Phil Ravita

BIOGRAPHY

Bassist Phil Ravita has been working in the Mid-Atlantic region as a free-lance musician and is a member of The Baltimore and New York Musicians Unions, as well as a member of the Baltimore Music Club. He began his career by playing Blues and Rock and Roll in local bars and clubs. He received a Bachelors Degree from Towson University and graduated Cum Laude in 2001.

While at Towson University, Mr. Ravita studied Classical Bass under Paul Johnson, Jazz Bass under Tom Williams and Victor Dvoskin and was first chair bass in the Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble 1. During that time, he also played for The Maryland Arts Festival. While studying at Towson University, Mr. Ravita performed with Claudio Roditi and Gabrielle Goodman.

In October of 2006, one of Mr. Ravita’s compositions, “Hard at Work”, was featured at a showcase sponsored by the Baltimore Jazz Alliance in conjunction with the Baltimore Composer’s Forum. This work was performed by the Greg Thompkins Quartet at this first annual showcase of works by jazz composers at the Eubie Blake Cultural Center. In January 2006, the Phil Ravita Jazz Group performed at Lexington Market and was favorably reviewed by the Baltimore Jazz Alliance in their monthly newsletter.

Mr. Ravita’s composition “AHAMAY” was chosen for inclusion on the Baltimore Jazz Alliance’s soon to be released compilation CD. This CD features music that is composed and performed by local jazz artists. His jazz compositions “Blackout” and “Blue Sunshine” have received local and national attention. His Blues compositions “Blind Alley," “Clouding Up,” “Familiar Stranger,” “Out Of Here,” and "Blue Sunshine" have received air play on the Dr. Lou Radio Show on WNJC 1360 AM in Philadelphia. In May of 2007, two of Mr. Ravita’s compositions,“In the Back Door” and “Blue Sunshine," received Honorable Mention in the Billboard International Song Contest.

Mr.Ravita continues to study bass with Ashton Fletcher and works as a free-lance musician in small and large jazz ensembles, as well as in orchestral settings. His efforts include performances with The Jim Stewart Trio, The Tony Abato Jazz Group, The William Goffigan Trio (at Art Scape 2001), The John Turner Jazz Trio, The Phil Ravita Jazz Quartet, Charm City Revival, Chris Presley and All the King's Men, Savoy Big Band, Jazz Vibes, Buddies’ Jazz Club Trio, and a benefit performance with the touring company of “Grease.” He has performed at the East Coast Jazz Festival and Night of 100 Elvises. He has also performed with Ruby Glover, Joyce Scott, Beverly Williams, the group “La Leyenda” and The Baltimore Music Club. Mr. Ravita is principal bassist for the Baltimore Philharmonia Orchestra.

Mr. Ravita plays a 100+ year old Henry Lowendall double bass, an Ibanez five-string Ergodyne electric bass, a Ken Smith six-string electric bass, and a Fender four-string jazz electric bass. He currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland and can be heard regularly performing in the Baltimore Metro Area.
